Welcome to the Alberta Sheep Breeders' Association website. One of the oldest livestock organizations in the Province of Alberta, we were formed in 1902 and have represented the Alberta Sheep Industry since then. We have provided for sales, coordinated the biannual Alberta Sheep Symposium, managed flock improvement programs, participated and financed applied and theoretical research programs, and have served as the voice of the purebred sheep producer to provincial and national bodies. The ASBA has an elected director on Canadian Sheep Breeders, has representation on the Alberta Livestock Research Trust, and works with the Alberta Sheep and Wool Commission in affecting growth and productivity in the Alberta flock.
Serving as an umbrella breed association for sheep breeders, the ASBA is a source of information on where to find different breeds of sheep in Alberta and whom to contact. We offer brief overviews of each common breed and have a listing of breeders who normally have stock for sale. We feel that there is no ideal breed for all conditions and try to fairly represent the strengths of the various sheep breeds that thrive under our climatic conditions.
The first World Sheep and Wool Congress was hosted by the Alberta Sheep Breeders in 1986 in Edmonton, and set the stage for the ones that have followed in Australia, Argentina, the United Kingdom and the United States. Until 1986, there was no international forum for the breeders of purebred sheep to meet and exchange ideas, information and genetics under one umbrella organization. Now sheep breeders worldwide can gather every three years and exchange friendships and thoughts.
Genetic improvement is high on the list of ASBA sponsored projects. Over the last number of years, many new breeds have been imported into Alberta by embryo and semen technology, and these new breeds are starting to have an effect on the North American industry. Canada and Alberta maintain some of the highest health standards in the world, therefore Alberta purebreds can be exported virtually anywhere.
The Alberta Sheep Breeders' Association is proud to serve the industry, and looks forward to the next 100 years.
