| One of the old British long wool breeds, the Border Leicester was imported from
England to Canada in the mid-nineteenth century and with the Oxford became the
dominant breed of the early Canadian sheep breeders. It is a medium sized sheep
with a thick fleece, proud stance and Roman nose. The emphasis on the meat production after the 1950s caused Leicester numbers to drop. However the Leicester line is present in many modern breed and it remains an excellent maternal breed for producing lambs on pasture. The ewes are prolific, good milkers and lamb easily. They are a forage-based sheep and do not have a heavy protein requirement, traditionally subsisting on pasture, hay and a light ration of oats and bran. A Leicester ram is often used with Down Breeds to produce first-cross ewes with good mothering traits and high prolificacy. |
